One of the most effective ways to get more traffic to your website is content marketing. Content marketing applies to all websites, from informational sites to e-commerce sites. The best part is, content marketing can be extremely cheap. This makes it an incredibly powerful method to bring more traffic and visibility to your website.

As the name suggests, for content marketing you need content. The important thing to remember here is that quality matters more than quantity. Anyone can churn out hundreds of posts a day, but if you really want to attract people to your site on a regular basis you need something that can capture and hold their attention. You need to give them a reason to spend time reading what you have to say. So how do you make your content is worth reading? Here are a few points to keep in mind when writing content-

1)   Pick a trending topic – Trending topics are more likely to be read because, well, they’re trending! Check out Twitter and Google for some of the trending topics. You can search for trending topics within your own niche. Once you find the right topic read a few existing blog posts on the topic to get a good idea about what’s being said. From there you can develop your own thoughts and opinions.

2)   Headlines matter – In fact, most people decide whether they should read on just by looking at the headline. So much for not judging books by their covers. Boring or obscure headlines will surely kill your viewership. Make them catchy.

3)   Hook them from the start – With so many other posts/apps/websites vying for your reader’s attention, you can’t be complacent for even a second. Your post has to be interesting right from the first word.

4)   Teach them something – Readers are more likely to read your post if they think they are going to get something out of it. How-tos are quite popular (like this how-to on creating content). Also, don’t make it too basic. You want to go into the details so that people actually learn something. Don’t worry about making the post too long. If you think it’s getting too big you can split it up and make a series out of it. This will bring readers back for more.

5)   Tell a story – People love stories. The more creative it is the better. Add in some anecdotes or real life stories to your posts. Making your post a story will also make it easier for readers to remember what you wrote.

6)   Make it personal – People love stories even more if they can relate to it. Use words like ‘you’ instead of ‘we’ to make it easier for readers to feel like a part of the story.

7)   Keep it simple stu… – Don’t try to use exotic words that need to be looked up in the dictionary. No one is going to be impressed by your vocabulary. If it gets too complicated readers will drop off. Keep it simple and easy to follow.

8)   Interact – Pose questions to your readers and keep them thinking. Also, leave things open-ended. Adding a ‘To be continued’ works. That will give them more reason to come back to your site. They’ll also post comments to answer the questions you pose. If you can start a debate your post could gain a lot of publicity.

9)   React – Respond to your readers. Don’t just stop after posting new content. Reply to their comments and listen to their suggestions. You need to show your readers that you respect their thoughts and opinions as well.

So the next time you write a post try incorporating these points into it. Measure the number of views it gets and let me know if there was an increase. See what I did there?
